Day 3: KULEN MOUNTAIN AND BAKHENG SUNSET VIEW
Spend half day exploring nature at Kulen Mountain. We will be seeing the Phnom Kulen Waterfall, River of a Thousand Lingas, and the Reclining Buddha. On the way to the mountain, enjoy a scenic drive through rice fields and rural villages. Once we arrive, we’ll trek around the sacred mountain’s abundant greenery, following lush jungle trails and seeing ancient temples and pagodas while listening to the narratives of our English speaking local tour guide. We can have a dip in the cool and clear waters of the waterfall, before we head up to the River of a Thousand Lingas, a sacred river filled with holy water. Admire the intricate carvings on the sandstone riverbanks and splash some water on your hands and face, which gives you good luck and health according to the locals. Climb up some more for a look at the reclining Buddha, a massive sandstone sculpture and one of the biggest of its kind in Cambodia! You’ll also get unbeatable views of the surrounding area, especially the lush forests and the hilltop houses of the Angkorian temples, perfect for a souvenir shot. Make our way back down to the picnic area beside the falls and savor a refreshing lunch right before we go down and see the sunset at Bakheng Hill.
Enter and leave Phnom Bakheng by climbing a long steep path with some steps on the east side of the monument (height 67 meters, 220 feet) In the 1960, this summit was approached by elephant and, according to a French visitor, the ascent was “a promenade classic and very agreeable.” Arrive at the summit just before sunset for a panoramic view of Angkor and its environs.
