AM (Morning adventure with breakfast)
1. Independence Monument and the Sihanouk Park. The Independence Monument is located in the center of Phnom Penh, the capital city of Cambodia. On November 9, 1962, the famous monument was inaugurated and opened for the national and international visitors to celebrate independence from the French protectorate.
It is dedicated to the patriots of Cambodia who fought against the French and lost their lives for the country at the same time, stands as a symbol of religious secularism. This 37-metre (121 ft.) tall monument gets adorned with light during every national festival. The Royal or the high official often light the ceremonial flame under this monument to inaugurate the festivities. Hence, this monument stands as a symbol of integrity and national solidarity to the people of Cambodia.
2. Royal Palace. The Royal Palace is one of Phnom Penh’s most splendid architectural achievements. It is home to His Majesty Preah Bat smdech Preah Norodom Sihanouk and Her Majesty Preah Reach Akka-Mohesey Norodom Monineath. The palace was built in 1866 by His Majeaty Preah Bat Norodom, great grandfather to our current King. The Royal Palace is built on the site of the old town. This site was especially chosen by a Commission of Royal Ministers and Astrologers because it had great geographical significance in relation to the King, who was regarded as a direct descendant of the gods, whose role it was to live and govern on earth under the influence of heaven.
3. National Museum. The National Museum of Cambodia is Cambodia’s largest museum of cultural history and is the country’s leading historical and archaeological museum. The museum houses one of the world’s largest collections of Khmer art, including sculptural, Khmer ceramics, bronzes, and ethnographic objects. Its collection includes over 14,000 items, from prehistoric times to periods before, during and after the Khmer Empire, which at its height stretched from Thailand, across present-day Cambodia, to southern Vietnam.
PM (Lunch & continues adventure)
4. National Garden Park & Genocide Museum. (S-21, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum). This Genocide Museum used to be a Public School prior to 1975. However, from 1975- 1979, it served as the biggest Prison in Phnom Penh and many Cambodians were tortured in this Museum.
5. Central Market. The dark-yellow Art Deco Phsa Thmei (New Market) is also referred to as the Central Market, a reference to its location and size. It was constructed in 1935to 1937. The Art deco building is shaped in the form of a cross with a nice central dome. And has four wings filled with shops selling gold and silver jewelry, antique coins, fake name-brand watches and other such items.
Around the main building are stalls offering Krama (checkered scarves), stationery, household items, cloth for sarongs, flowers and a lot more. For photographers, the fresh food section affords a lot of opportunities. There are a host of good value food stalls on the structure’s western side, which faces Monivong Blvd. Central Market is undoubtedly the best of Phnom Penh’s markets for browsing. It is the cleanest and has the widest range of products for sale.
6. Riverside/ Sisowath Quay. A stroll or Cyclo ride along the park-lined riverfront is the best way to end the day. Sisowath Quay is a striking 3-km-long boulevard located along the intersection of the Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers. This is perhaps the most bustling area in the city, with a row of boutiques, bars, cafes, restaurants and luxury hotels. Even though this street is considered downtown Phnom Penh, Sisowath Quay has a cool, relaxing atmosphere allowing both Cambodians and tourists to enjoy a relaxing stroll. This esplanade enjoys a strategic location, being the meeting point of almost all roads that lead to the city’s key highlights. Riverside hosts most of the cultural activities related to the Kingdom. From the traditional ploughing ceremony to start the planting season through to the most popular of all, the Water Festival to celebrate the turning of the tides of the Tonle Sap River, Riverside is always full of life and activity.
